Changi hits all-time record

Singapore Changi Airport reached an all-time high of 35 million passenger movements in 2006, an eight percent increase over 2005. Cargo also set a new high water mark, with a total of 1.91 million tones processed – a 4.2 percent increase over 2005.

Changi’s total passenger throughput for December also ranked high, with a 10.1 percent increase over December 2005: 3.42 million passengers. It was the busiest month for the airport in 2006, partly because December coincides with the school holiday in Singapore.

Changi has also done well on the awards front. The readers of Germany’s Business Traveller magazine have voted Changi “Best Airport in the World” and “Best Airport in Asia-Pacific” for 14 and five years straight, respectively. Changi also won “World’s Leading Airport” and “Asia Pacific’s Leading Airport” at the 13th World Travel Awards last September.

Changi marked its banner year by announcing its first airport investment in China. The airport operator plans to acquire a 29 percent stake in Nanjing Lukou International, which is the largest airport in Jiangsu Province. It will invest a total of US$138 million in the airport.
