Hong Kong opening new terminal
This month Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is beginning the phased opening of its new Terminal 2. Located next to the airport’s existing Terminal 1, the new 140,000 sq. m. facility is the centrepiece of SkyCity, a large-scale airport development project, and will include a 35,000 sq. m. SkyPlaza with 130 retail and catering outlets. There will also be a 36-bay bus terminal and 56 airline check-in counters and customs and immigration facilities.
"T2 is an integral part of SkyCity, a development that is transforming HKIA from a city's airport into an airport city,” said HKIA commercial director Hans Bakker. “Being the centrepiece of the SkyCity, the new terminal is also an integrated multimodal hub, where air, sea, land and rail transport converge seamlessly."
The airport operator has invested HK$2.8 billion (US$358 million) in the new terminal, an automated people mover connecting T1 and T2, and two office buildings, including HKIA Tower, which will be the new headquarters for the Airport Authority. It has also invited interested parties to apply for the pre-qualification round to build a new air cargo terminal.
Passenger and cargo throughput at HKIA grew 9.1 and 5.2 percent respectively in 2006.
