Siemens wins LAX bag handling deal

Siemens has been awarded a US$50.8 million contract from the U.S. construction company Clark/McCarthy for a baggage handling system with integrated explosive detection screening. The system is part of the renovation of the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and is expected to be operational by April 2010.

Siemens will provide 14,596 feet of conveyor with six claim units on a 45,000 square foot expansion and handle the overall project management, system integration and installation. 13 Explosive Detection Systems (EDS) will be integrated into the in-line security system. The new system will make it easier for passengers to check their bags because the security screening machines will no longer be located in the lobby, as is still common at many airports in the U.S.

The new system will employ 57 high-speed diverters (HSD) to handle the bags more gently, reducing the risk of baggage being damaged. The scanner arrays placed throughout the system will enable the bags in the system to be tracked more accurately and allow for the proper routing to the passengers’ final destinations.

The contract also includes the option of an operations and maintenance contract, which may be executed any time before the project’s completion. The Siemens contract is part of a US$575 million contract awarded to Clark/McCarthy last September for a broad range of improvements at LAX – the largest contract issued for a single project in the history of Los Angeles.
