US Airways chooses new ‘nerve center’
US Airways has chosen a site at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIA) for a new US$25 million, 60,000-square-foot flight operations control center. The new facility will eventually house 600 professional staff who will run what the airline calls the nerve center of its 1400 daily mainline flights.
Phoenix, Arizona and Charlotte, South Carolina also bid for the honor, but the airline says it picked Pittsburgh for a variety of reasons, including the impact of relocating experienced employees from the Pittsburgh area, as well as the “outstanding commitment” and cooperation between city, county and state officials behind Pittsburgh’s bid.
US Airways already operates operations centers in Pittsburgh and Phoenix, while Charlotte is the airline’s largest hub and hosts several support facilities including flight training and maintenance.
