Delhi upgrades launched

Work has just started on a massive US$1.93 billion upgrade to New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport. The work will give the airport a third terminal building and a third runway – one of Asia’s longest – before the Commonwealth Games open in 2010, more than doubling its current capacity to around 37 million passengers a year.

Delhi International Airport (DIAL), the consortium in charge of developing, maintaining and operating the airport, is launching the work in response to the pressure India’s large-city airports are feeling with the advent of half a dozen private airlines that have started up in the last three years. Traffic congestion is causing major flight delays and stressing ground infrastructure.

"With the completion of this airport, Delhi will boast a world class airport which would not only cater to growing aviation traffic, but also serve as a benchmark for other airports," DIAL managing director Srinivas Bommidala said in a statement. DIAL is a joint venture of India's GMR Infrastructure, German airport operator Fraport and the state-run Airports Authority of India, and won the rights to develop New Delhi Airport a year ago.
