Winnipeg ATB build begins
Construction of the new air terminal building (ATB) at Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is set to begin early this spring. The new air terminal is intended to provide capacity to meet growing customer demand, enable common use passenger processing (CUPP), offer transparency and natural light, and provide a greatly expanded range of concessions. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of 2009.
A national and local joint venture arrangement between EllisDon Construction and Man-Shield will be responsible for construction of the new terminal building, upper level roadway, central utility building and utility tunnel. In the past year, airport redevelopment was responsible for nearly 375,000 person-hours of onsite work, primarily on groundside infrastructure and parkade construction.
“This is an exciting phase of airport site redevelopment, construction of the new terminal is fundamental to our vision of leading transportation innovation and growth benefiting our community,” said Barry Rempel, Winnipeg Airports Authority president and CEO. “This will be a truly historic initiative, one that signals the start of a new era for the aerospace industry in our region.”
