LAX awards soundproofing contract

The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners has awarded a contract to Professional Building Contractors Inc. for part of the LAX Residential Soundproofing Program. The US$1.3 million contract covers sound insulation modifications on 57 residences, comprising five single-family homes, a nine-unit apartment block and 43 condominium units.

The overall program covers more than 8200 residences in areas of Los Angeles with a recorded noise equivalent level of 65 decibels or higher. Program contractors typically install double-paned windows, solid-core doors, fireplace doors and dampers, attic baffles, insulation and heating-ventilation-air conditioning (HVAC) to reduce interior noise by about a half.

The completion of this contract will bring the total residences covered or underway to 5327. The remainder of the 8200 are in the design phase or awaiting it – or else the residents have not responded or have indicated they do not wish to participate.
