Swissport, partners ramp up operations in Japan
Swissport Japan and its local partner Marubeni Corp. have embarked on a phase of intense development of their joint business activities, Swissport has announced. Following the acquisition of aviation maintenance provider SGS in autumn 2006 and the recent shareholding involvement of Marubeni, which now formally owns 49 percent of the company, Swissport Japan has been laying the groundwork for the launch of its full range of ground handling products and services. From June onwards Swissport says that it will be in a position to offer the full range of major aviation services, and will concentrate initially on Nagoya and Osaka, later extending operations to Fukuoka and Tokyo Narita.
In the meantime, Swissport Japan has won its first major customer at Nagoya Airport. Shigeru Ohashi has been appointed company president and CEO and Philip Bowell has assumed commercial and operations responsibility as COO.
“The Japanese ground handling sector is highly attractive and offers a vast amount of potential,” said Urs Sieber, Swissport’s executive vice-president for the region. “I am looking forward to a phase of what should be strong and dynamic growth, and I’m convinced that our partnership with Marubeni will strengthen our capabilities.”
In other news, Swissport was named “Global Aviation Ground Services Company 2007” by the Institute for Transport Management.
